Summer College in Biotechnology and Life Sciences (SCIBLS) Fungal Foray

North Carolina high school students associated with the Summer College in Biological Sciences Program (SCIBLS) at North Carolina State University (NCSU) participated in a fungal foray at the Schenck Forest on Thursday, July 7, 2016 with their instructor Dr. Melissa Merrill and members of the Cubeta laboratory (Lindsey Becker, Dr. Henry Van Cotter, Kathryn Hanser, Brianna Hoge, and Charles Rich). The students collected mushrooms, and took notes on their appearance, habitat and location where they were growing in the forest. The fungal specimens were taken to a laboratory on the NCSU campus to examine their morphological characteristics and extract DNA for sequence based analysis and identification.  Ten students developed a poster on a fungus that was presented at the SCIBLS Science Symposium on Friday, July 29, 2016 at NCSU.
