Mycological Society of America and National Science Foundation STEM Educational Module Development on Fungal Biology and Biodiversity Workshop for Science Teachers in Georgia

A workshop for Georgia high school science teachers will be offered from July 14-18, 2017. The workshop will be conducted at the University of Georgia, Athens Main Campus in conjunction with the Mycological Society of America annual scientific meeting. The workshop will provide teachers with an opportunity for informal science inquiry through participating in field and laboratory activities, interacting with fungal biologists and attending scientific sessions. Upon completion of the workshop, teachers will have an increased understanding of the 1) function and role of fungi in ecosystems and society, and 2) potential use of fungi to illustrate key scientific concepts central to chemistry, cellular biology, ecology, evolution, and genetics for developing inquiry-based and experiential learning assignments and activities in science curricula. Funding from the National Science Foundation is available to pay costs for teachers to attend the workshop. Teachers will also be provided with materials and supplies to incorporate workshop activities into classroom lesson plans.

Criteria for selection of the teachers will be based upon responses to the three questions in the online application, current participation in science curricula and maximizing the number of schools represented. More than one teacher from a school will be considered if spaces are available. Selected teachers will be notified by April 1, 2017 via e-mail and receive a stipend of $600 to participate in the workshop. At this time, teachers will also be provided with further schedule and materials information for the workshop.
